Spent the last few hours making some quick animations for a robot fighting game prototype in UE4. Their rig is hilariously broken(I was actually laughing as I struggled with certain parts), but the robots are cool and I was able to make due. Hoping this one keeps moving forward, as I wouldn’t mind doing more of these dudes going Mortal Kombat on each other.

Sooo.....
Testing text posts by babbling thoughts on how tumblr works.
I guess image posts are different from a text post with images(?) I stuck a caption on each image, but they don’t seem to show up anywhere. Only the one caption for the post shows up. Also, not satisfied with the way it gets formatted for repost to blogspot.

Inaugural first tumblr post!
Bunch of sketches from spring that I never posted. Mostly curious whether ifttt will explode in my face.

Changes
But over the past year I realized I gravitated toward tumblr blogs and truly hoped that various artists had tumblr pages, just because it was so easy to follow, like, or reshare their work.
Sure, blogger has those options in one or another form. But what even IS google friend connect? I have no understanding of how it works or what it's purpose is. Likewise with the google+ button to +1 it....where the hell do I see my +1's? I don't use an RSS feed, and to follow a blog I have to copy the url and go to my dashboard to add it.
Tumblr has a single button for each of these actions. As a user, I push it and the job is done. So, why wouldn't I hold myself to that same standard of simplicity that I'd come to expect from others?
I guess there's the question of whether I can migrate old posts from this blog to new blog. That may seem silly to some, but I really enjoy seeing my terrible work from way back, as well as that of others. I find it fascinating.
Anyway, I got the same name .tumblr.com
Also, I realized I can easily have my cake and eat it as well, thanks to ifttt.com/
Ifttt lets me build macros for various things, among which is the ability to automatically repost from tumblr to here. I'm just not going to be updating this directly anymore, and felt like making a little post to mark that, as well as link over to the primary blog in case anyone happens upon this old place.

Demo Reel
Here's my demo reel, as of now. Will keep updating this and eventually migrate it to my website, as soon as that gets done.

Gestures :D
Sit Stand character sculpt. This was the first time I tried a zbrush centric workflow. Made the sculpt, then retopologized with NEX, UV, back to zbrush to project normal/displacement maps and do more sculpting on the face(that's the one with the eye lids). Had some horrible problems, realized my UV's were overlapping, then couldn't transfer uv's from the fixed model for some reason, learned an interesting work around involving messing with the heirarchy of the shape node and the transform node. Over generalizing here to keep from rambling too much, but the point is, it was a hell of an adventure.
Push Pull model. Had some interesting adventures with the push pull project, too. This time it wasn't the main character, but the "squid-ball" he pulls off the rock that later attacks him. Maya on our render farm wasn't interpreting the IK's position properly for motion blur. Ended up having to render a section locally, a handful of frames at a time.
Did this as a demo to show some friends how zbrush works. 1h30m, I think? Also did a shrunken head in an hour, but have no idea where that file ended up.

Animation Exercises
This one is a character waiting with a prop. I have a friend who seems to have an outright physiological impairment with respect to waiting for the microwave to finish. Without fail, he always, ALWAYS stops the microwave with a few seconds left. On top of it, he'll heat things about a third of the time he's supposed to, and ends up either taking forever to heat his food, or eating it cold.
Now I'm working on Push/Pull(pretty much what it sounds like, but with our own character this time).

Quick stuff

The last thing Captain Cook saw. Simplifying/stylizing, but still keeping some of that human anatomy I've spent so much time learning.

Thunder lizard, going to change the context of this one when I get back to it.

Trying to solidify the story behind this, going to work on the character more once I have his story.

Trying to make more images with some story, or at least a mood, in mind.

Observing, playing, trying to keep it loose.

Digital Doodles Part 3
Didn't really post these chronologically, the above doodle was done earlier on than some of the others I posted. Regardless, it was significant to me in my quest to become comfortable with going straight in with color/value and being more aggressive. Also, it was clearly done very fast, which I like
Anyway, this was my first life drawing I did with my tablet over the summer. At some point i finally felt brave enough that it may be ok to pull it out in the life drawing class and try to do a live figure.Digital Doodles Part 2
Here I used a bit of texture to play with some of the brushes I saw in the Gnomon video Barontieri did. I watched it several times during the semester, but had a hard time applying all of the brushes.
I felt like I could understand what I wanted to depict and how, but something wasn't working. At some point I figured it was that I simply didn't have enough experience with the basic idea of "painting" within Photoshop. I decided I needed to temporarily ditch the efforts to have tons of detail pop up really fast on its own. Because the truth is that the detail will never come up on its own because the brush is suddenly doing work for me. Experienced artists wield the brushes and settings in photoshop using their understanding of the fundamental ideas that are involved in art(light, form, color). I needed to focus on getting the big shit down right before I worried about the details in it. If I wanted details, there's no reason I can't do that with the basic brush. Then I also used the a chisel brush, to start getting myself accustomed to the various things that can be mapped to the pen tilt and stroke direction.
Occasionally I played with other little things here and there. But for the most part I made myself stick with the two simple brushes and just worry about trying to get used to some sort of work flow.
